Theme: Heritage Undiscovered – Debating the Unrecognised
The MAATI Convention 2025 seeks to explore the complexities of heritage recognition by shedding light on cultural treasures that remain overlooked, unacknowledged, or at risk of being lost. While many sites and traditions are formally recognised and protected, countless others—ranging from forgotten architectural marvels to fading intangible cultural practices—remain in the shadows.
Through this call for photographs, we aim to capture the essence of undiscovered heritage—the places, traditions, crafts, and narratives that have yet to receive their due recognition. We invite photographers, heritage enthusiasts, and researchers to visually document these unseen legacies, provoking conversations on their value and the urgent need for their conservation.
We encourage submissions under the following sub-themes:
🔸 Recognised vs. Unrecognised Heritage – Photographs showcasing lesser-known sites, traditions, or cultural assets that remain outside heritage lists despite their significance.
🔸 Reviving the Neglected – Abandoned structures, forgotten settlements, disappearing traditions, and community efforts in rediscovering lost heritage.
🔸 Heritage and Disasters – The impact of natural disasters, climate change, and human interventions on heritage, as well as restoration and resilience-building efforts.
🔸 Heritage Conservation in the 21st Century – Images reflecting urbanisation, modernisation, and changing landscapes affecting heritage sites and practices.
🔸 Balancing Historic Identity with Contemporary Needs – Adaptive reuse projects, heritage in urban settings, and the evolving relationship between history and modernity.
🔸 Intangible Cultural Heritage: From Documentation to Revival – Rituals, performances, crafts, oral traditions, and practices at risk of fading away.
