MAATI Convention 2025 : Heritage Undiscovered – Debating the Unrecognised

MAATI is proud to present MAATI Convention 2025, in collaboration with ICICH – ICOMOS, ICTC – ICOMOS and ICOMOS India as our knowledge partners. The proceedings and research papers from this convention will be published in Volume 2, Issue 1 of MAATI KATHA Magazine.

About the Convention

The MAATI Convention 2025 revolves around a fundamental question: What should be considered heritage, and why? While many sites and traditions receive formal recognition, numerous others remain overlooked, despite their cultural, historical, or social significance.

This convention aims to initiate critical discussions on heritage recognition, shedding light on lesser-known examples that deserve attention. Through paper presentations, debates, and collaborative discussions, we will explore the complexities of identifying, documenting, and conserving unrecognised and recognised heritage. Our goal is to develop inclusive frameworks, policies, and practices that ensure a more comprehensive approach to heritage conservation.

Objectives of the Convention

The convention seeks to challenge existing frameworks of heritage recognition by examining biases, overlooked histories, and intangible cultural practices. It will address modern challenges such as urbanisation, globalisation, and climate change while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among architects, conservators, historians, and policymakers. The ultimate goal is to draft inclusive policies/frameworks that ensure broader and more equitable heritage conservation.

Convention Structure

The event will feature paper presentations across eight sub-themes, followed by moderated debates on critical issues. The final day will focus on a collaborative policy development session, where experts and participants will draft actionable guidelines for future heritage conservation efforts.

Expected Outcomes

The convention will deepen understanding of heritage recognition challenges, produce policy recommendations for integrating unrecognised heritage into conservation frameworks, and build a strong professional network dedicated to inclusive and sustainable heritage conservation.
